Christopher's
Run is a benefit for a little guy who we all became close with and who we
will always remember. June 2008 marked the First Annual "Christopher's Run"
5K Run/Walk in Southampton to remember Christopher Lesta.
Christopher was born with MPS II (or Hunter’s Syndrome), a rare and
untreatable genetic disorder caused by the body’s inability to produce
certain enzymes. Due to this inability, cells do not perform properly and
cause progressive damage throughout the body, including a drastically
shortened lifespan. Christopher underwent a Cord Blood Transplant in
December 2006 at Duke University Medical Center and had been doing well.
In September 2007, he even started Kindergarten and became known to everyone
as the “Little Man with the Big Smile.” He had many friends and made quite
an impression on anyone that knew him. Unexpectedly that December,
Christopher passed away due to an infection from his mediport (that was
surgically implanted after his transplant).
Christopher was a sweet, young boy who was very special in our community and
who will always have a special place in our hearts.
Please consider making a donation to ‘The Christopher Lesta Fund’ or simply
register to run or walk in the next annual 5K. All proceeds will benefit the
Pediatric Stem Cell Transplant Program at Duke University Medical Center and
the Special Education Program at the Southampton Elementary School. We can't
wait to see you there next year!
WE MISS YOU CHRISTOPHER!
